Well, Season 50 was a bit of a breakout season for Willunga Hill. Having never been in Div 2 before, the Hill broke into the division early in the season. Our first Div 2 race was on day 9, the classic Ainet - Bruggen. One of the in-house talents, Kees Fitzgerald, was given the honour of captaining the Hill in it, and produced a solid 6th. It wasn't enough to keep us in Div 2, as the early part of Season 49 had been pretty good. But the team kept picking up some points, and we were back in Div 2 races by day 28. Our first podium came on day 30, Alexander Tony producing the goods. Ten days later, Fitzgerald bettered him with a 2nd, which Tony immediately equalled.
Points kept rolling in, and then finally a WIN! On day 52, Fitzgerald did something no-one at the Hill had managed in many seasons of Div 3 -- win a race. Sam McLaren would later repeat the dose with his own first win, this time in a Div 1.1 race -- indeed, our first Div 1.1 race ever!
And so it kept going, with more points coming, and slowly the squad pushed up Div 2. Incredibly, we broke in to Div 1 for the first time ever too -- ending the season 49th overall with 1912 points -- our first 1000 point season was big one.
Alexander Tony's consistency saw him take home the NZ National Title, the Hill's first such success, with a 818 point season, placing him 44th on the OCM rankings, the equal 5th best season by a Kiwi rider in the history of OCM.
Management thanks all involved in this very satisfying success. We hope to push for even more successes in our first Div 1 races early in the new season!
